Upcycle a Face Vase to the “Max”
A sculptural female face vase gets a bold, colorful makeover as we continue celebrating Women’s History Month. While the style inspiration comes from pop artist Peter Max, this joyful upcycle honors the beauty, strength, and creative spirit of women.
Peter Max is known for his vibrant, high-energy artwork—full of peace, love, and radiant color. In that same spirit, this project is all about celebrating women who shape our world with brilliance, resilience, and style.

Here’s how:
1. Find Your Good (and Your Muse!) at Goodwill
Shopping at Goodwill of Greater Washington is always an adventure—you never know what treasure is waiting to be discovered. My go-to spot is the New York Avenue NE location, where inspiration is always just an aisle, shelf, or rack away.
Beyond the finds, what makes every Goodwill nonprofit retail store special is the people. You’ll meet team members from all walks of life—welcoming, helpful, and part of a mission that uplifts individuals across our community every single day.
On this particular visit, I stumbled upon a true standout: a sculptural vase featuring a woman’s face and delicately placed hand. Elegant. Unique. Full of personality. I knew instantly that she was coming home with me for a 2026 glow-up.
And remember—when you donate to Goodwill, you’re not just decluttering, you’re contributing to life-changing programs. Bundle similar items, drop them off, and grab your receipt. It’s a win-win-win.

2. Dream Up Your Design
The beauty of a piece like this? The possibilities are endless. Her graceful shape immediately brought Peter Max to mind—think bold colors, graphic lines, playful patterns, and that signature groovy energy.

Start with a quick sketch on scrap paper. Map out where your colors, lines, and details will go. This step helps your final piece feel balanced, intentional, and totally one-of-a-kind.

3. Paint Pens = Pure Magic
If you haven’t discovered paint pens yet—get ready. They are a game-changer.
My latest set (a total steal at $15!) had every color imaginable. I began with a black paint pen to outline the design, creating sections for color just like in Max’s work. Then came the fun part: filling in those spaces with bold primaries and electric hues.

A few tips:
- Apply light layers and let them dry before adding more
- Repeat colors throughout your design for harmony
- Go back over your black lines at the end to keep everything crisp and popping

No brushes. No mess. No stress. Just pure creative joy. I love paint pens so much that they now are part of my carry-on luggage when I travel. They are easy to pull out and create, even with a little turbulence!
Expert Tip:
To protect your gal’s final design, you might consider giving it a spray of polyurethane. Satin or semi-gloss always are good finishes. Place it outside on a drop cloth and give her a light layer or two. Allow plenty of drying time.
4. Stage It with Style
Now for the grand finale—showing her off! Your transformed face vase is more than décor—it’s a statement piece. Place her where she can shine: a bookshelf, an entryway, or that corner that’s been begging for a little life.

Add flowers for an extra touch of magic—suddenly her blooms become a fabulous, ever-changing hairstyle. Think of it as functional art with flair.

Closing Thought
As we celebrate Women’s History Month, this vibrant creation is a reminder to honor the creativity, strength, and beauty of women everywhere—and to keep adding our own bold, colorful mark to the world.
