Make your mom (or a special mother figure) smile brightly with a gift that blooms from the heart. A vibrant plant in a flowerpot transformed with Goodwill-found fabric is a thoughtful way to show your love—and your creativity.
It’s a win for Mom, a fun project for helping hands of all ages, and a little love letter to Mother Nature, all while keeping items out of the landfill.

Here’s how:
1. Discover what’s blooming at Goodwill
Hunt for blooming good deals on colorful, creative finds at your neighborhood Goodwill nonprofit retail store. As you refresh your space for spring (and beyond), you’ll find everything from lanterns and serving trays to extra seating and even patio umbrellas.
Start in the Housewares Department to find flowerpots—ceramic or clay pots with smooth surfaces and clean lines work best. On my visit, there were plenty of great options that looked good as-is, no DIY required!
Next stop: the clothing racks. Look for bold, bright fabrics—shirts, dresses, and skirts give you the most material for your money. Think graphic prints and vibrant colors, especially ones your mom loves. I picked three standout pieces that were arty and funky.

Expert Tip:
Choose fabrics made from cotton or linen when possible. Avoid stretchy, thick, or heavily textured materials. Learn from me, please! Polyester may look pretty, but it doesn’t always stick the landing with Mod Podge.
2. Trace your pattern
To get a smooth wrap, you’ll create a custom fabric shape for your pot. Draw a straight vertical line on your pot. Place the pot on your fabric with that line facing up. Slowly roll the pot while tracing along the top edge. When the line completes a full rotation, you’ve got your width.
Repeat the process along the bottom edge. You will end up with two drawn curves/arches.

3. Cut with the curve
Using sharp scissors, cut out your curved, arch-shaped fabric piece. This shape will help the material wrap neatly around your pot—no petal-to-the-metal guesswork needed.

4. Brush on Mod Podge, then start wrapping
Apply a generous layer of matte Mod Podge to the pot. Place the pot on its side and in the center of your fabric piece. Begin wrapping one side, then the other, allowing a slight overlap. Use your fingers to smooth out wrinkles and bubbles.
Fold the top edge over the rim and into the pot, applying more Mod Podge to secure it. Flip the pot and repeat on the bottom, trimming excess fabric as needed.
Let your project dry—this is where things really start to grow on you.

5. Glue gun to the rescue
Keep your glue gun nearby. If your fabric isn’t very absorbent (hello again, polyester), use small dots of hot glue to secure the folded edges inside the rim and along the bottom. This helps keep everything neat and tidy—no unraveling your hard work.
6. Time for twine
Wrap twine around the upper third of your pot, about three to four times, to add texture and a natural touch. Secure with small dots of hot glue as needed.
This simple step really ties everything together!

7. Fill with florals
Head to your favorite garden center or hardware store and choose flowering plants in complementary or contrasting colors.
A purple petunia paired perfectly with one pot, while a bright orange marigold added a cheerful pop against a blue and teal fabric. Mix and match for a look that’s fresh, fun, and full of life.

When gifting, consider your recipient’s favorite flowers—it’s a thoughtful detail that will make their heart bloom, too.

8. Show off your style
These pots shine indoors or out. Style them on a table with other Goodwill finds like colorful books, candles, or small decorative pieces. Add them to a patio or bistro table for an instant charm upgrade.

And of course, gift one to your mom, a mother figure, or someone you care about—just because. After all, the best gifts are the ones that keep on growing, just like the love you share.
