I’m knee deep in my annual winter hibernation aka my style rut. Every year once I have to scrape my car off for the fourth week in a row, it hits. I’m standing outside in the freezing cold, cursing my own style as my heels sink into the cold ground. I spend the next few weeks obsessively checking the weather, praying for warmer temps. While I wait, I continue to dress in black in mourning of the undeniable impact that cold weather has on my creative lens for style.
Okay, so I may be exaggerating a bit. But, if you follow my outfits on Instagram, you’ll notice my winter blues are reflecting in my color palette. I’ve brainstormed some ideas to bring life back into my winter style as I patiently await the warmth. March is always a great month to start transitioning in spring pieces while still layering up for warmth.
Colorful layers. If you caught my post about flannel back a few weeks ago, you’ll remember I deemed it able to be worn in the professional environment if layered appropriately. A tissue-weight, flannel patterned button-down shirt can work wonders for bringing life to a look. The lightness of the shirt makes it a great piece to layer over; with the lighter material usually comes bold and bright colors and patterns which serve to help us broaden our basic solid layers. When I say layers, it isn’t just about shirts. You can swap out your wine colored lipstick for a brighter red and dust on some popping pink blush as a springy layer, too!

I snagged this brightly colored, tissue-weight top from Columbia Pike Goodwill for $5.00! Perfect for getting me back to color and way away from grays and black!

Bold accessories. My weakness is definitely in the accessory department. Aside from scarves, I wear little accessories which furthers my lifeless look in the winter. I’m making a commitment to start wearing some of the wonderful chunky necklaces and bracelets I’ve scored from Goodwill. Most of these I’ve found for under $4.98, so that makes this solution an incredibly affordable one.
This cuff from Goodwill would be a perfect way to pull some spring color into a look!

Pedicures and peeptoes. There is something that makes me feel alive when it comes to wear opened-toe shoes again. I don’t splurge on spa pedicures from salons like I used to be doing a great, at-home pedicure gets me ready for spring! I probably wear my peeptoes too early most seasons (for functionality’s sake) but I just feel alive when I can start switching out my “winter” shoes for “summer” ones. Who’s with me? Paint your toes and slide them into an open-toed style – I guarentee you’ll feel better than you did before! Who cares about cold feet? (Not this fashionista!)
I spotted these at Goodwill and although, they were sadly not my size, they would do the trick for some life in a look!
