New Era 59Fifty Fitted Caps became a staple in streetwear fashion in the late 80s and early 90s. Since then, it has maintained its popularity for almost 40 years. If you didn’t know, these hats were designed to have the perfect fit. There are as many as 20 different sizes to fit your specific head shape. My husband swears these are the best caps. Brand new, these hats can cost as much as $65.00. The caps I found were $6.99.
On almost every visit to Goodwill, I always find at least one New York Yankees or Washington Nationals fitted cap. You can find them hanging on the end cap in the men’s section at the Hayfield location. Waldorf and North Rockville will be mixed in with all other hats near the bags and shoes. I’ve been trying to figure out if the same person is donating these hats each trip. I always find size 71/2; it took a few visits for me to find my husband’s size 71/8.
I know most people are apprehensive about buying a thrifted cap because of the fear of getting some sort of infection. The majority of the hats I’ve found were practically brand new. I sanitize anything I can’t wash with a microban and then use a damp cloth to wipe it down. A few videos on YouTube show you how to wash these hats without losing their shape.
On your next visit to Goodwill, check out one of these sections for your fitted cap; fingers crossed you find your size. For more thrifting and DIY tips, follow me on Instagram @iamksimone.
