I consider myself to be a Washington DC transplant.

Shortly after my freshman year at Howard University, I told my mom that I wasn’t moving back to PA because I had fallen in love with DC. Fast forward, 23 years later, I am still learning and growing in this area. I have seen how fashion has changed over time, however there are classics that a man from DC would rock.

While hanging out at the Ashdale location in Dale City, VA; I found some vintage brand Coogi and Universal Madness shirts and hoodies. Coogi is a colorful Australian brand that was founded in the last 60’s. It gained recognition in the 80’s and 90’s. Universal Madness is a African American owned clothing brand founded in Washington DC displaying its colorful streetwear.

Anytime I would see a casually dressed man in either brand, I felt he was DC through and through. I always wanted a Coogi sweater since I went to Howard.

I found two Coogi polo style shirts with bright colors and patterns. They were in great condition despite the age of the items. They were sized at 6x, however I considered buying them to tailor into a shirt dress. The Universal Madness hoodies were also similar sizing, which makes me think it was the same person or family who donated them.  I thought the best thing to do is leave them at Goodwill for someone who was certain how they could style the items.

Seeing these items took me back to part of the fashion that made me fall in love with the city!
