SHANA TOVA (GOOD YEAR) 2025, my fellow gifted thrifters and thrifty gifters!  It’s January – second month of Winter, Tevet and Sh’vat of 5785; month of the end of Hanukkah, New Year’s Day, Epiphany and Three Kings/Queens/Monarchs Day, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Holocaust Remembrance Day, Lunar New Year (of the Wood Snake).

As I write this, it’s usually wintry in the DMV.  Here in Gaithersburg, it’s snowed twice this month, and is below freezing this week.  I love snow, and don’t mind the cold much – but for one thing, I lived in the Boston area until 2014, so Mid-Atlantic winters seem like a big improvement.  Your mileage may vary.  However, even I need a break before Spring.  And as regular readers know, I adore the shore.  So today we’re going to look at some of the best seashore paintings I’ve seen on Goodwill of Greater Washington’s Shop Goodwill site recently.

Here are five of just waves and birds.  This is such a popular painting subject, and I’ve seen so many of these paintings, yet I never get tired of them – or the real thing.  I’m especially impressed with how some painters capture the distinctive way sunlight shines through water.

These four include dunes.  I can easily imagine walking into these works.  I love the one that includes a window, and was very tempted to bid on it – I wouldn’t have been able to resist it offline.

Human habitation is centered in these four – two of which are different prints of the same painting.  Were they donated by the same person, or just a coastal coincidence?  One of the reasons I like that painting is it reminds me of Solomons Island here in Maryland, where my spouse and I have vacationed, and would again.

I’ve also seen a lot of good seashore artwork at my local Goodwills, here in Gaithersburg and next door in Rockville, and I’ve taken some of it home.  Someday I’ll do a post about my gallery.  In the meantime, meet me here next month – I haven’t decided on my topic yet, but as always I’ll be showing you some special items from one of my specialities.
