Dear readers, I got caught in the middle of a fashion debate while I was getting my teeth cleaned a few weeks ago and I just had to share it with you to see your thoughts on what seems to be a hot topic. As my dental hygienist was doing her usual scrape and poke around, she noticed my high heeled booties and said something along the lines of “Ah! I love those. It is always great to see a woman wear a REAL heel. Like if you’re going to wear heels, wear heels. I hate those kitten heels. Have you seen those? They make everyone’s legs look so stumpy. Those (my booties) are REAL heels.”
She peaked the interest of the patient and hygienist next to us as well. The other hygienist unwaveringly agreed with her, stating that “…kitten heels are the worst looking shoe for a woman’s leg.” The other patient, who had finished her cleaning, began to talk about the several orthopedic issues she suffered from which prevented her from wearing full blown high heels like mine. All relevant points! I squirmed in my seat as I wanted to weigh-in so terribly but unfortunately, my hygienist was thoroughly working away in my mouth, preventing me from giving my stance! I gave an occassional “mhmm” but that’s all I could offer.
You all know me, I am high heel lover. I have the luxury of having healthy feet (so far!) and that allows me to keep stomping in my power shoes, as I like to call them. I know that there are a lot of people that don’t have that luxury, so they choose flats or lower heels – some of which are kitten style. Personally, I find a kitten style heel to be awkward. They’re often clunky and shockingly, I find them less comfortable than a higher style. They put a painful pressure on the center of my heel so I tend to steer clear of them. Not to mention, I do feel they make my legs look a little stumpy.
So, after listening to these three ladies debate the place of the kitten heel in women’s fashion, I had to bring the issue to you to see your thoughts. Are kitten heels completely unflattering? Are they far from trendy? Do anyone else feel as strongly as my dental hygienist about this?
You never know where you might encounter the next great fashion debate, right? My ears are always open to fashion-centric shop talk!
i 100% prefer the LOOK of a “real” heel. they lengthen the leg line and are overall more flattering.
however, that said, i have extremely sensitive, finicky feet, and if im going to be standing/walking for any period of time, “real” heels are completely out for me. while i will sometimes go for dressy flats, i just find that SOME sort of heel has more of a sense of dressiness or professionalism to it… so for those reasons, im a supporter of the kitten heel.
sometimes, you just have to compromise. 🙂
It definitely does give a professional, dressy feel – I agree with you there. I loved the grays one I saw at Goodwill! They were perfect for work!
Some kitten heels are cute, but I could never wear them. Being quite petite, it just doesn’t make sense to me to wear kitten heels. I’d rather wear dressy flats or go all the way with my heels.
With your height, I totally agree! What is the point? Haha! Just might as well go for a flat!
I love both! For years I only wore high heels, then I started having joint pain and was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I still love high heels but most days wearing them is too painful. For me kitten heels are a good solution. I go for those with a pointed toe. It elongates the leg, just like a pointed toe flat.
Deb, it seems like you are not alone in that! A lot of ladies commented that the kitten heel provides them with a happy and health medium 🙂 I totally agree about the pointed toe!
I like to wear kitten heels and high heels, both are comfortable for me. For those people kitten heels are a good solution and good in working stations. I go for those with a pointed toe. It elongates the leg, just like a pointed toe flat.
Pointed toes – SO true! There is just something about them that gives beautiful length to the legs. Thanks for your comment!
