I am an 80s baby who was raised in the 90s. Therefore, I am very biased, believing that the 90s is the best era for everything from music to television shows. Life did not feel as heavy as today and I feel that entertainment is a part of it. My family would gather around the TV in the living room to watch beloved sitcoms together and laugh. As I browsed the South Dakota Ave Goodwill location, I found graphic t-shirts that brought a sense of nostalgia from those evenings, sitting cross-legged and laughing until tears came to my eyes.
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a TV show that shows Will Smith, a teenager from West Philly who moves to California with his wealthy family members. The comedy shows Will’s developing years, including going to a new school, meeting new friends, and adapting to life on the West Coast. The t-shirt shows an image of Will from the opening credits as he arrives at the Bank residence with his camera around his neck, and the word Fresh is shown above the image.
Martin
The Martin show is one of the best shows hands down. It shows everything from love to friendship to African Americans living together. Martin Lawrence stars in the show with a star studded cast that kept the laughs going for five seasons. It would come on every Thursday night at 8:00pm followed by Living Single and New York Undercover. One of the main characters was Tommy, who was one of Martin’s best friends. His running joke was that he did not have a job, but always was fresh. On one particular episode, Martin had to appear in court and asked his friends to testify. As he was looking through Tommy’s address book, a few women had the acronym “GTD” next to their name. Martin pressed him for the reasoning and the term “Got The Draws” was born. It is still used to this day as jokes.
Another character from Martin is Jerome, who is a self-proclaimed player or ladies man. He looks like he is stuck in the 70’s or 80’s with his clothing and greasy hair. He is also missing teeth and has bad acne. However, he knows the women love him and he is always hitting on Pam who is another character on the show. The t-shirt shows Jerome proclaiming himself as a player from the Himalayas.
Each T-shirt is from a brand called Faktifixion and is priced at $4.99. I had to purchase all three, which will act as reminders of laughs and simpler times from the 90s. Check out Goodwill for nostalgia and great laughs!
