We’ve had some interesting trends this winter, dear readers. There’s definitely been some paradoxes in style on the fashion scene. You’ve got the crop top being worn throughout winter on one hand and then you’ve got these chic, oversized coats on the others. The best part? The two opposites can absolutely be worn together!

I’m not appauled by this trend, in fact, I’m quite intrigued at how the look can be pulled off. I’ve been doing a little research to see how people are rocking the oversized outwear without looking like they’re lumbering around in their father’s trench. I’ve gathered a few observations on how to rock an oversized without looking like the michellin man.
Fitted under layers. When attempting to pull off an oversized coat, it is critical that there is some ‘fitted’ element in the outfit. After checking out many looks, I think either a fitted pant is the best pair here. It doesn’t have to be jeans, but those are a staple that we all have in our wardrobe so it’d be an easy way to rock this outfit. I saw several looks that featured black skinny trousers or leather leggings with a slouchy coat and they were perfectly chic. It is all about balance with this trend.

Playing on length. Not all oversized coats are long but most hit knee to mid-shin. With a longer coat, you’ll want to play on the length by pairing it with something that will keep you from looking like you’re drowning in coat. The easiest way to achieve this is to simply pair it with heels. Suede is a great fabric for a winter pump that would keep the warm, rustic look of a oversized coat looking chic. If you aren’t a heels gal, don’t fret. Simply pinning up your hair can give the illusion of length in the neck.

Structured accessories. Some would argue that certain oversized coats can be shapeless so accessorizing becomes critical in keeping your look zestful. If you’re going to a casual style, adding a structured bag can keep you from looking sloppy. A tall tote or chain strap bag will give your look just the right amount of spark. Some structured sunglasses are another easy way to give some sass to an oversized coat look, too. Last, when in doubt – add a statement necklace! It is a cheap and easy way to elevate your style in one simple piece.
