Last Winter, I began to explore the book section of Goodwill as a cold-weather activity. During the Summer, I spend a lot of time enjoying the weather; however, the cold weather keeps me inside.

I have found countless cool books at Goodwill, including Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. I immediately recognized the title from the TV series with the same name on Hulu. I heard great reviews for the series and how people were upset that it only lasted one season. With such great reviews, I hoped that the book would be more vivid than the series.

While healing from surgery, I picked up Black Cake. I was also careful not to read any reviews or descriptions about the book to be completely unbiased. The book begins with the matriarch’s death and how her estranged children had to come together while grieving. The book immediately threw me into several scenarios with other characters that build onto the details of the story. I also enjoy the short chapters as a person who has a short reading attention span.

My goal is to finish the book by the end of the year and go into 2025 to enjoy the TV series. I encourage you to check out the book section and connect with the characters in the books!
