Secondhand shopping has always been a part of my life. From growing up in DC, begrudgingly walking to the Georgia Avenue Thrift Store for back-to-school shopping to (thanks to my frugal Dad) to presently when I visit a thrift store just because it’s a Monday.
While I don’t enjoy heading out to a mall/center or standalone store to shop anymore (blame the wonderful world of online shopping) I still very much enjoy secondhand stores. That moment of finding a one-of-a-kind vintage item is a pretty awesome feeling. Also, knowing that I can find the latest trends in a secondhand store while saving a whole rack of money is a pretty awesome feeling, as well.
My style of today has evolved because of secondhand shopping. It allows me to be creative and innovative in how I put my looks together. Usually, I’m always wearing at least one secondhand item in my outfit. It can be a pair of big earrings that were popular in the 80s or 90s, an unique brooch or pin, or a colorful printed midi skirt.
Not a day goes by without some kind of secondhand item on my body. It’s almost second nature. These days, I find myself wandering over to the men’s section for an oversized sweater or button down shirt. And don’t get me started on my addiction to vintage home decor items.
Over the past few years, I’ve grown to appreciate Goodwill. Not only for keeping their eyes on finding the best vintage and gently used high end and low end designers around but also having such a charitable heart. The way Goodwill bridges the gap between fashion and charity is amazing to witness…and being able to get involved.
Speaking of which, Goodwill will be launching their annual summer trunk show at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery next Thursday, August 25 and Friday, August 26. The retail pop-up will operate from 11AM – 7PM. I attended the launch a couple years ago and had a great time as a attendant and shopper.
This time around my handiwork will be seen as I got the opportunity to curate clothing items for the event. The items chosen came from the DC Metro Area Goodwill stores in Gaithersburg, Rockville, Bowie, and DC. Being as I’m a plus size woman, I went into these stores knowing I would select fashionable and trendy clothing items for plus size women and men who will be attending the summer trunk show. My selections are a great mixture of Summer and Fall items for women and men in all shapes and sizes.
Will I see you there?
