As fall sets in and the temperatures drop in the Washington, D.C. area, it’s time to come in from the day parties and BBQs and relax on the couch with movies and popcorn. There is something about rewatching movies that makes you laugh in tears over and over again. If you know anything about me, I will laugh like it is my first time watching a movie.
I usually do not browse the DVD section at Goodwill; however, something drew me to it during this particular trip. I found the following titles:
- Why Did I Get Married?
- American Gangster
- Harlem Nights
Why Did I Get Married is a film by Tyler Perry that shows an annual trip for four couples who met in college. The cast includes actors and actresses such as Jill Scott, Tyler Perry, Malik Yoba, and Janet Jackson. The movie is filled with one-liners and tears and has a great message about friendship and how relationships change over the years.
American Gangster is a film based on Frank Lucas’s life, who was a known heroin dealer in the 1970s in Harlem, NY. Denzel Washington portrays Frank from his highs and lows. Russell Crowe plays Richie Roberts, an NYPD detective who is hot on Lucas’ tracks and eventually represents him as his lawyer. I am a forever Denzel Washington fan who loves all of his movies. American Gangster is part of my top five roles that he plays.
Harlem Nights is a comedy starring all of the African American comics based in 1938 in Harlem, NY. It tells the story of a club and gambling ring filled with unforgettable lines and characters. It came out in 1989, but the jokes are classics.
