An awesome August 2025 to you, my fellow gifted thrifters and thrifty gifters! Third and last month of Summer, Sivvan and Tamuz of 5785, Fat Liberation Month, and Lighthouse Month! Month of Lughnasadh and Lammas, Tisha B’Av (loss holiday), Lighthouse Day, Tu B’Av (love holiday), THRIFT SHOP DAY (YAY), and Trans Flag Day!
Too, this is my FIFTIETH blog post for Finding Your Good, and I’ve been a blogger here for FOUR years! Time flies when you’re having fun. And being frugal.
My family and I love lighthouses, and have visited several; we’d love to see all of the ones here in Maryland – and Michigan and Minnesota, where some of my family is from and lives. Lighthouse fandom is a very thrifty thing to be part of (though many lighthouses need donations for restoration and preservation). And it’s a pretty airborne-illness-safe hobby, though size and disability access to ye olde buildings can be challenging.
One of the best ways to mitigate those challenges is Goodwill – they have great ways to collect and share lighthouse-themed items locally and from home, online and off. My spouse and I have a growing collection of thrifted lighthouse tchotchkes, including models of the DMV lighthouses, which I need to show you at some point.
Today I was going to show you the best lighthouse items I’ve seen on DC Goodwill’s Shop Goodwill site recently, many of which are paintings. But I’ve seen so many good lighthouses in store this year that I’m going to focus on those. Here are ten at my Goodwill, right here in Gaithersburg:

And here are three at a Goodwill in the Minneapolis area.

But what about the rest of what I’ve seen, and thrifted, in Minneapolis, you may be thinking. Good thinking – I’ll be blogging about that here soon. In the meantime, meet me here next month, when we’ll be exploring Goodwill’s Judaica (Jewish art) offerings, to celebrate the Jewish high holidays / holy days this Fall.
