My love for thrifting started years ago in my home state of North Carolina. At that time it was out of necessity.

Fast forward about 10 years, I no longer thrift out of necessity. I thrift because, well, I love it.

Over time, I have become an expert at understanding the benefit of buying secondhand. Many people from my home state of NC complain that they can never find the gems that I come across in the DMV area. And honestly, there are some differences with thrifting in NC. Based on who’s donating, sometimes the items NC don’t fit my personal style as much as when I thrift finds in MD or DC. I love beading, sequins… basically anything over the top. Statement Pieces, 100%!

I know 9 times out of 10, sometimes I won’t quickly find those pieces in NC. Therefore, I focus on more classic and basic pieces to add to my wardrobe that I do know exist.

When I thrift in NC, I thrift without expectations. That way, I am surprised at what I find! I choose to go in with an open mind and a positive attitude.

And with thrifting overall, since inventory (which is fueled by donations) is always changing, all stores, whether in NC or the DMV, might not always have what you’re looking for on a particular shopping trip. Please make a note that not every thrift trip will be a success. However, I do not let that defeat me or deter me from going back.

I spent the other weekend in NC and decided to stop by the Goodwill not far from my house. There, I was able to find two pair of shoes, a blazer and a shirt that I am excited to add to my existing wardrobe.

Hidden gems can be found anywhere we just have to be willing to put the work in for them!
