An opulent October 2025 to you, my fellow gifted thrifters and thrifty gifters!  Second month of Fall, Tishrei and Cheshvan of 5786 (we started a new Jewish year last month), LGBTQ+ History Month, and the second half of Latinx Month; month of the Days of Awe, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Coming Out Day, Simchat Torah, Indigenous Peoples Day, Shemini Atzeret, Pronouns Day, Intersex Day, and Halloween.

Today I’m displaying some dragons!  As I do here every October.  I identify with, love and collect them.  And I curate and present Dragon Days on my social media, where all of my posts are dragon-themed (I also do Lizard Days).

Nu, because dragon fandom is so big, thrifting dragon items can be competitive and otherwise challenging.  But that also means there’s a huge quantity, quality and diversity of dragon items on the thrifting market.  I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the many fabulous dragon items I’ve seen and thrifted, offline and on, at Goodwill.

Here are several I’ve seen at DC Goodwill’s Shop Goodwill.  First, jewelry, because I love that as much as most dragons.  And a vase, to keep one’s cave classy.

Also, of course, some tchotchkes.  Interesting to see Michael Whelan’s 3D work – he’s an extremely successful 2D sci fi and fantasy artist.  The Nanoblock kit is also a pleasant surprise – I’m not a Pokemon person, but I am an AFOL (Adult Fan Of Lego).  And you don’t see a lot of multi-headed dragons.

I really hope there are Thai Jews who use these as menorahs.  And yes, that is also a plug for my tenth annual Mycroft’s Menorah Mishigas in December.

Qilin are mythical Chinese creatures that generally have the heads of dragons and the bodies of cloven-hooved animals.  There are also versions in Japan (if you’ve seen Kirin beers, you’ve seen a version of this critter, though “kirin” can also mean “giraffe”), Korea and Thailand.  I think of them as dragon-horse hybrids, but there can be many other animals involved.

I hope this helps inspire some scaly savings.  Tune in next month when I’ll be taking you with me on my first visit to a Goodwill in Minnesota.  And as I mentioned, December will be all about menorahs.
